At 3:00 a.m. on May 23, 2018, Mount Polley Mine locked out the members of United Steelworkers Local 1-2017. Their purpose? To impose their last offer on USW members – which includes several major concessions.
The Union held multiple membership meetings the week of May 14th. The member’s mandate was clear – they were NOT prepared to accept concessions.
Mount Polley’s Concessions include:
- Temporary Employees o An issue that seriously erodes the bargaining unit. Members lose appointments to training, postings and overtime o All while Temp employees are denied full time work, benefits and job stability
- Seniority Rights
- Severance issues
- Duration of Collective Agreement
- Tool replacement for trades members
- Recognition of the Union
The Employer has declined to meet with the union. The union has made itself available to meet, but Mount Polley Mine has declined our offer.
The Union is committed to negotiating a fair collective agreement that respects the needs of both parties.
