Attention: Former Wolverine Mine (Walter Energy) Employees
Please be advised that the Union has learned that distribution of severance pay to affected individuals is in its final stages. The distribution of severance is currently pending Service Canada’s final calculations regarding EI clawback, which are being made for each affected individual. The delay concerns an issue regarding the allocation of the funds to a specific year and the effect this allocation has on the calculation of clawback. Recently, the Union expressed concern that the severance payments were being allocated by Service Canada to the wrong year, resulting in disproportionately high clawback amounts. Since the Union voiced its concern, Service Canada has had to review each file to ensure that the allocation is correct and that clawback amounts are appropriate. The Union has also made attempts to ensure that Service Canada has the correct contact information for each individual. However, due to privacy limitations Service Canada will only speak to the individual employees about their respective files. The Union cannot communicate to Service Canada on its members behalf. If you have not yet received correspondence from Service Canada, or you believe Service Canada may not have the correct information to contact you, please contact the Service Canada Call Centre at 1-800-206-7218 to provide your information, or to discuss your file generally.
We understand the momentous frustration that constant delays of the distribution are having on former employees and their families; however, we want the affected individuals to know that, although the timing of the distribution is essentially out of our hands at this stage, the Union is doing everything in its power to ensure that the distribution (and the calculations of any clawback) is being done correctly.
Again, please direct all your questions regarding the distribution of severance pay to Service Canada Call Centre at 1-800-206-7218.
