Our breach of Section 54 case at the BC Labour Board has resulted in an award for damages to Mount Polley Employees who were laid off in January and February of 2018. The Board has ruled that the Employer make whole any Employees who lost wages as a result of the company’s failure to give 60 days’ notice in advance of layoff. All Employees who were laid off or forced to bump to lower wage rate classifications within 60 days of December 29, 2017 should be paid for their losses.
On Thursday, June 21st and Friday, June 22nd, your bargaining committee traveled to Vancouver for meetings with the Company’s bargaining committee and Labour Mediator Dave Schaub. We were hopeful that there would be a way to move forward with negotiations but, unfortunately, after two days of meeting, negotiations broke off abruptly as a result of differences in positions on the issue of use of Temporary employees doing bargaining unit work.
Bargaining resumed on July 3rd in Prince George, BC. Your USW Committee showed up with a new framework document prepared to work towards concluding an Agreement. Regrettably CONIFER was unable to engage advising us lengthy caucus time would be required prior to any meaningful response.
